The line “So you’re telling me there’s a chance” from the movie Dumb and Dumber is funny because of the way it humorously highlights Lloyd’s (Jim Carrey’s character) extreme optimism and obliviousness to reality.
In the scene, Lloyd is asking Mary (the woman he’s interested in) about his chances of being with her. When she tells him that his odds are “one in a million,” most people would take that as a polite way of saying it’s not going to happen. However, instead of being discouraged, Lloyd enthusiastically seizes on the fact that there is any chance at all.
The humor lies in the absurdity of his reaction—he completely overlooks the bleak odds and focuses only on the tiny sliver of hope.
